The Blasting Room

Punk Rock Precision
Founded by legendary drummer Bill Stevenson (Descendents, Black Flag), The Blasting Room is hallowed ground for rock and punk music. The requirement here was unique: a room that can handle extreme volume without losing clarity.
Unlike gentle orchestral studios, this facility deals with fast tempos, aggressive transients, and roaring guitars. The acoustic design had to be "bulletproof"—tight enough to keep fast double-kick drums distinct, but alive enough to give guitars their legendary bite.

Taming the Volume
Recording loud music in a room with poor bass control results in "mud." To combat this, we focused on two key physical properties:
1. Low-Frequency Absorption
To capture the attack of a kick drum at 180 BPM, the room cannot "hang on" to bass frequencies. We implemented deep trapping to shorten the decay time below 100Hz, ensuring every hit is punchy and defined.
2. Controlled Reflections
A "dead" room kills the energy of rock music. We used calculated diffusion to scatter high-frequency energy. This keeps the room sounding exciting and bright for cymbals and guitars, without creating harsh flutter echoes.
